Rita Martinez, a teacher, and the principal of a middle school in Texas, who came to the city with 13 students on a trip, were worried this Friday not knowing if they would be able to sleep at home or in an airport.
His flight with a layover in Dallas was delayed by an hour, threatening his connection from there to Texas.
“I’m going to try to be calm for them, because it’s hard and I want them not to feel anxious as well,” Martinez said.
Like this group, hundreds were seen at the airport experiencing the same predicament on an already busy day with the start of a Juneteenth Monday holiday weekend.
This due to a set of electrical storms moving through the northeast of the country, along with a tornado watch in Pennsylvania, which led to a temporary interruption of flights on Friday morning in LaGuardia.
During the afternoon the airport accumulated delays in more than 400 flights.
At JFK some 300 flights had delays.
For Nelson Llompart and his co-workers, who traveled from Miami to attend a work meeting, these delays will have consequences on their weekend.
“The ‘weekend’ one had thought to take advantage of it a little more and unfortunately with this ‘delay flight’ it will be a little more difficult”, said Llompart.
“I’m going to arrive late at my destination and obviously one has plans and they ruin one’s plans,” said Víctor Guerrero.
And while no major storms are expected in the city, NY1 weather services are forecasting a chance of isolated showers throughout Saturday.
Meanwhile, air quality is expected to return to unhealthy levels this Saturday, although conditions as extreme as those experienced last week in our city are not expected.
