Flight Delays and Cancellations Continues During Peak Holiday Travel

DALLAS—

Crowds ease at US airports thanks to better weather conditions, but there were still hundreds of flight delays and cancellations as of Thursday morning on what is expected to be a peak holiday day, and areas of uncertain weather threaten with disrupting air traffic on the weekend.

More than 1,000 US flights have been delayed and nearly 400 canceled by 9:30 a.m. Eastern Time, according to FlightAware.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) expects Thursday to be the busiest day of travel during the July 4 holiday weekend, with more than 52,500 flights in total.

Forecasters forecast scattered showers and thunderstorms in the northeastern part of the country later Thursday and Friday and storms are expected further south along the east coast through Saturday.

Similar unstable weather systems threaten the west of the country for the next few days.

Thousands of people have had their vacation plans ruined after a wave of storms hit the Northeast in recent days and frustrations are running high.

United Airlines, which operates a hub in Newark, New Jersey, canceled the most flights among US carriers for the fifth straight day through Wednesday.

“We are starting to see improvements across our entire operation,” United said Wednesday night. “As our operation improves in the coming days, we will be ready to restore our operations for the holiday weekend.”

The worst impacts on Thursday morning, as has been the case for the last two days, are on the east coast of the United States. The FAA temporarily suspended flights to Boston on Wednesday.
