Passengers on an SAS flight that flew from Oslo to Kirkenes could not land due to sea fog. The passengers were informed that the plane had to return to Oslo, which caused frustration among the passengers, including Robert Lundgren (41). SAS emphasizes that such incidents can occur due to the unpredictable weather in Norway, and that passengers should expect it to happen again and again. Show more

– We sure as hell didn’t want to be kidnapped back to Oslo, says Robert Lundgren (41).

After a longer summer holiday, Lundgren and his family were on an SAS flight that flew from Oslo to Kirkenes on Friday.

The weather in Kirkenes meant that the plane could not land and the passengers were informed that they had to return to Oslo. Round trip Oslo-Kirkenes takes around 4.5 hours.

After a lot of noise, according to Lundgren, around 40 passengers were allowed to get off the plane at Alta airport, where the plane was supposed to refuel in order to fly back to the start.

The family was among the passengers who disembarked in Alta.

Lundgren had to shell out for new plane tickets to get on from Alta to Kirkenes. In addition, he is still missing the luggage for the whole family – because it went with them to Oslo.

– I fly a lot and have never come across anything like this, says Lundgren.

– It is completely absurd, he adds.

Had to cancel the whole Oslo trip

Ine Marie Kristiansen (18) and her boyfriend Joachim Bye (19) were also affected.

– We had to cancel our entire trip to Oslo, as we didn’t want to make it there, she says.

They were going on the plane that was scheduled to land in Kirkenes and fly back to Oslo with new passengers.

– So far we have not heard anything from SAS, says Kristiansen.

SAS: – Understanding

Tonje Sund at SAS fully understands that people are frustrated that it was a tortuous journey home.

– There are many factors that come into play and many factors that the passengers do not see. We also naturally consider what is best for the passengers.

– We are used to dealing with weather-related challenges. It happens every now and then, and it’s only to be regretted, she adds.

According to Sund, it is not abnormal that passengers are not allowed to disembark before the plane has reached its final destinations.

– On a general basis, there may be talk of a new landing attempt at the destination being considered. It may be that the passengers are not allowed to disembark because they are looking at how best to get the passengers on with alternative forms of transport.

– If at short notice you are told to make another landing attempt, SAS is dependent on the passengers being on board.

Sund emphasizes that she does not know the specific assessment that was made on this flight, but says that it is mainly about safety.

iFinnmark mentioned the incident first.

Summer season: Flights are fully booked

Some of the passengers who were with us all the way back to Oslo have been waiting for several days to get on another flight north again. It is the summer season and the flights are fully booked.

– It makes it difficult to send luggage, as well as set up extra routes. And when it comes to people’s missing luggage, it must be sent back as soon as possible.

Lundgren hopes this will not happen again and is betting that their luggage will turn up again.

– We’ll see what happens, he says in conclusion.
