Flevoland’s research on HPV vaccination

GGD Flevoland is investigating the vaccination readiness for HPV vaccinations in girls and boys born in 2012. This autumn GGD Flevoland is investigating what parents want to know about HPV vaccinations for their child. These vaccinations are also known as ‘cervical cancer shots’. More than 2,500 Flevoland parents with a son or daughter born in 2012 are invited to participate in this voluntary survey.

In the Netherlands, all girls aged 12-13 are invited for the HPV vaccination. This is done through the National Immunization Programme. HPV means Human Papilloma Virus. This injection prevents cervical cancer in girls, but also vaginal cancer, oral cancer and throat cancer. Boys can also get sick from HPV. They can get oral cancer, throat cancer, penile cancer and anal cancer. HPV vaccinations prevent this to a great extent. From 2022, girls and boys will receive an invitation for HPV vaccinations. The age is also declining.

Children are then invited in the year they turn 10.

Christel Bleijenburg, pediatrician at GGD Flevoland and researcher, explains: “This examination takes place once. We do it via a digital questionnaire, parents have received an invitation by post. The questionnaire contains questions about how parents think about vaccination.

We hope to learn more about the questions parents have about HPV vaccinations. It is very valuable to us that parents participate, even if they have doubts about the HPV vaccination. With the results of the survey, we can improve our information to parents. It’s about giving parents the right information and making better decisions about HPV vaccinations for their child.”
