The excess mortality in 2022 is much higher in some regions of the Netherlands than in other parts of the country. Mortality data show that, particularly in Flevoland, Drenthe and parts of North Brabant, more people have died than expected.
In Flevoland, 14.5% more people died this year than expected. This is a total of 1,838 deaths. This is evident from Statistics Netherlands data up to and including 28 August. In northeastern North Brabant, the excess mortality rate is 10.7. Drenthe sees 9.7% more deaths.
The percentages are lowest in South Limburg, Gooi en Vechtstreek and Rotterdam-Rijnmond. But even more people died there than expected.
Statistics Netherlands sees that mortality will increase this year mainly among nursing home residents and people over 80.

Privacy regulations hinder further investigation
Scientists cannot adequately conduct further research on the large number of deaths in our country. They do not receive certain data, for example, on coronary infections and vaccinations from RIVM. Jaap van Dissel, the head of the health institution, wants to share more data, but feels compelled to abide by the privacy rules.
CBS previously concluded that the excessive mortality of the past two years is partly the result of the corona pandemic, but that the virus cannot explain everything. It is important to find out what the other causes are. For example, delayed care and late diagnosis due to postponement of doctor visits during the block may be related.
