Since Friday, March 26, more than 600 people have signed a petition calling on Fleurimont hospital to allow access to a second accompanying person in delivery rooms.
The Ministry of Health and Social Services already allowed women who give birth in the orange zone to benefit from this support.
In the petition we can read thatthe CHUS Fleurimont has issued more restrictive directives, thus not respecting government instructions and depriving women of the best support in their childbirth.“,” text “:” the CHUS Fleurimont has issued more restrictive directives, thus not respecting government instructions and depriving women of the best support in their childbirth. “}}” lang = “fr”>the CHUS Fleurimont has issued more restrictive directives, thus not respecting government instructions and depriving women of the best support in their childbirth.
But the management of the Fleurimont Hospital had chosen to be cautious in recent weeks and still refused the presence of these accompanying persons.
The reality of this installation is different from the others. The birthing spaces are very, very limited. So it is more difficult, much more difficult, to respect the sanitary measures in this environment. That’s why it took a little longer.
, explains Marie-France Thibeault, spokesperson for the CIUSSS de l’Estrie-CHUS.
A great relief
The future mother Bianca Michaud, whose delivery is scheduled for the month of June at Fleurimont hospital, says she is reassured to know that she will not have to choose between her spouse and her companion.
For me who was very anxious about having to give birth in the hospital, having to choose between one and the other, I found that it didn’t really make sense. Because for me, both are essential. […] To have someone else who has an outside point of view […] who can have a cool head, I found it very reassuring.
One of the authors of the petition, Cindy Pétrieux is happy with this outcome, but she hopes that it will materialize and that mothers will not have to make this choice at such a pivotal moment in their lives. She says she remains perplexed since last Friday parents were said to have been told something else by the hospital.
The case of the Fleurimont hospital would not be separate. Since the petition was posted online, Cindy Pétrieux has received messages from women living with the same problem in other regions of Quebec.
A national mobilization is reportedly underway to address this issue throughout Quebec.
