The Flemish YouTuber Acid does not yet know whether he will appeal against the suspended prison sentence he was given last week. He was punished for disclosing the names of those involved in the death of student Sanda Dia.

Acid’s lawyer previously announced that his client will appeal anyway. But the YouTuber leaves on Sunday a video know that he actually does not want to appeal.

“My lawyer says I should appeal, because the sentence is simply ridiculous. But we have proven our point,” he says in the video. “I will carry that prison sentence on my criminal record as a constant reminder of what happened here. And I will do that with pride.”

Nathan Vandergunst, as the YouTuber is actually called, says in a comment below the video that he is still thinking about further steps. “I haven’t officially decided anything yet, this is something I will discuss and decide with my lawyer in the coming weeks, but nothing has been officially filed yet.”

Acid raised 162,000 euros through crowdfunding

The YouTuber received a suspended prison sentence of three months and a fine. He must also pay compensation to the family of one of the members of the student association where Dia died during a hazing incident.

Vandergunst started a crowdfunding campaign that has now raised more than 162,000 euros. Part of this is for compensation and the rest goes to the family of Dia, who died in 2018.

There was a lot of outrage in Belgium last year surrounding the criminal case. Eighteen members of the Reuzegom student association were given community service. Shortly after that conviction, Vandergunst announced the names of the students involved via his YouTube channel.

Student association Reuzegom was dissolved after Dia’s death.
