Flemish minister Demir declares 3M in default: important legal step so that chemical company must tackle pollution

In “The appointment” on Canvas, Demir says that she did not go over night to come to the notice of default. “I have consulted with lawyers from my administration and beyond, also with lawyers in America. So we have a solid file.” The fact that 3M has been fined nearly a billion dollars in the US for similar offenses reinforces Demir’s belief that the company will have to comply with the demands she makes.

The money Demir is demanding from 3M will be used, among other things, to pay for blood samples taken from the population, to excavate contaminated land and to reimburse farm shops that were no longer able to sell their locally grown products due to the pollution. That is how the minister explains.
