Flemish Government’s Premium for Electric Cars May Strain Budget, Council of State Warns

What is this about?

To reduce CO2 emissions from traffic and encourage the purchase of zero-emission cars, the Flemish government announced a premium for electric cars last year.

The intention is that in 2024, people will receive a premium of 5,000 euros when purchasing an electric car for less than 40,000 euros. In 2025 this will still be 4,000 euros, in 2026 2,500 euros. Peeters has allocated 20, 23 and 32 million euros respectively for this purpose.

However, in an advice, the Council of State says that the budget provided may not be enough to meet every request. Based on sales figures from last year, EV Belgium, the federation for electric mobility, expects that 9,000 electric vehicles will be sold this year, twice as many as in 2023. This would mean that the Flemish government will receive 45 million euros in premiums this year alone. must pay out.
