Flemish government warns: ‘Home vaccination is only for …

Only those who really do not get to the vaccination center are eligible for home vaccination. That says the Flemish government, which has announced who is eligible for a vaccine at home. She asks not to burden the GPs with additional questions. ‘It is not on demand’, says Dirk Dewolf of the Agency for Care and Health.

Ten to twenty patients per GP. For example, the Flemish Agency for Care and Health estimates the number of patients eligible for home vaccination. It will be the general practitioner who decides who, but the Flemish government asks you not to start begging from your general practitioner yourself. The criteria are really too strict for that.

The main criterion: mobility. Those who really cannot or may not move to the vaccination center can expect a team at home. ‘But it is not on demand‘says General Administrator Dirk Dewolf. “You can let him know that you want individual vaccination, but it will be the doctor or the doctor of the vaccination center who will determine whether that question is appropriate.”

In addition to mobility, there are also medical reasons to qualify for home vaccination. Who is bedridden, for example. Or patients whose relocation alone poses too great a risk of infection, such as cancer patients. People with advanced dementia, severe autism, a serious psychiatric problem or a serious physical disability are also eligible.

The vaccination will be done with the Janssen vaccine, because only one dose is needed. The GP will be able to choose whether he / she will visit him / herself or have a mobile team leave from the vaccination center.

During the press briefing, the Flemish government returned to the concerns about AstraZeneca that had spread from Denmark. “A chief doctor signaled some concern among hospital staff who have already been vaccinated with AstraZeneca, but it is true that you should get your second dose of the same vaccine,” says Dewolf. ‘We can alleviate this concern by informing them properly: there is no link whatsoever between the blood clots and the vaccine. Choosing the vaccine is safer than choosing not to be vaccinated. Those who are invited cannot choose a different type of vaccine. ‘
