The Flemish government wants to offer the entire population an extra shot against the corona virus. For the people who got Moderna or Pfizer, this will be the third shot; anyone who was vaccinated with Janssen will soon receive a second vaccination.
It was previously decided that everyone in poor health and all people over 65 can get an extra shot. This should now be possible for all Flemings aged 12 and older.
Minister Beke of Welfare said at the Flemish broadcaster GARDEN that it is an important step because of the rising infection rates. “We’re seeing increasing evidence that a third shot can help us get people out of hospitals.”
Healthcare staff
According to the minister, there is a great demand for the extra jab, for example among healthcare staff. “They need this to continue doing their job. We also see that other countries are starting to give the third shot and there are enough arguments to do this here as well.”
Before a final decision, the government is still waiting for advice on this from the Superior Health Council, the government’s scientific advisory body.
According to the Dutch government, an extra shot for the entire population, as a boost to previous vaccinations, is not yet necessary, not even for the elderly. People with poor health do get a booster shot offered.
