Currently, 3,073 premium applications have already been submitted for an electric car. This was what Minister of Mobility Lydia Peeters (Open Vld) replied today in the Flemish Parliament to a question from Els Robeyns (Vooruit). The applications now amount to a sum of approximately 15 million euros in premiums, which almost equals the released budget of 20 million.
Earlier this month, the Flemish government decided to make the premium for electric cars available for only one year instead of three. Since then, 3,073 premium applications have already been submitted. About 2,600 applications were for new cars, 440 for second-hand cars, a hundred for cars for car sharing and forty for vehicles for non-profit organizations. Multiplied by the premium amounts, this amounts to an amount of approximately 15 million euros.
Cutting other budgets
If the amount of 20 million euros released is not sufficient, an additional 6 million euros will be used from climate resources. “And even if that is not sufficient, we will make adjustments,” assured Minister Peeters. “Then we will be a reliable government for everyone who orders a car until December 2024.”

“I have serious doubts about whether you will be able to get by with 26 million euros,” Els Robeyns responded. “And where the resources will have to come from differently.”
“You say that the premium should mainly serve to keep second-hand cars in Flanders, but now we see that barely ten percent of the budget goes to second-hand,” added Stijn Bex (Green). He again called on the minister to stop the premium, except for car sharing.
