Flemish family energy bill will be about 3 euros lighter in 2024 due to reduction in government allowances

The CREG approved Elia’s surcharges for public service obligations for next year. To be clear: these are not the rates that Elia charges for financing the construction and management of the high-voltage grid. These will increase in the coming years.

This concerns costs that Elia incurs for all kinds of tasks that the government imposes on the grid operator. This mainly concerns the purchase and sale of green energy certificates, but in Flanders, for example, also the pylon tax. This is the tax that must be paid to cities and municipalities that have masts on their property.

These allowances for the public service obligation are determined annually. It is up to the CREG to assess whether these surcharges are not unreasonable. The energy watchdog has approved Elia’s proposal. What now appears? The surcharges for 2024 are a lot lower than in 2023. Good new for the consumer.

In concrete terms, this makes the families’ bill a little bit lighter. Elia calculated that surcharges in Flanders will decrease from approximately 1.9 to 0.9 euros per megawatt hour. For an average family, this amounts to a saving of 3 euros per year. In Wallonia the savings are slightly greater. The allowance drops from approximately 11 euros to 6.3 euros, or 15 euros less per year for an average family.
