There is a shortage of materials such as wood, steel or insulation materials on the market. Therefore, their prices are rising sharply, informs Deutsche Welle.

According to data from the Federal Statistical Office in Wiesbaden, prices for new, conventionally built properties rose by 6.4% in May. compared to the same period a year ago.

This means that construction costs in Germany have increased as much as never before in the last 14 years. The last time the price of new real estate increased by 6.4 percent. was reported in May 2007.

The woodwork itself increased by 28.5 percent. This is the result of an increased demand for construction timber – both in Germany and abroad. The prices of roofing and sealing works increased by 8.3%, and plumbing works – by 8.1%. and sewage works – by 7.8 percent.

The costs of concrete works (by 6.6%) and masonry (by 4.8%) are also rising. The same also applies to finishing works (by 5.5%), screed works (by 7.4%), and even external thermal insulation systems and locksmith works (by 6.3%).

Construction works with the highest proportion of finishing works, i.e. carpentry, also increased. In May 2021, they were 5.8 percent more expensive. compared to May a year earlier. All these increases are reflected in the final price of flats.

Rising prices for building materials are not only a problem in Germany. Also in Poland analysts note this problem and they are alarming that the prices of some materials have increased by up to 300% in a short time.
