Flash Floods Hit Garut, Hundreds of Residents Refuge

Flash floods hit a number of sub-districts in Garut Regency. Hundreds of residents fled because their homes were flooded. The local government appealed to residents to remain calm but vigilant.

Garut Deputy Regent Helmi Budiman said the flash flood occurred after heavy rains that flushed Garut Regency since Friday (15/7/2022) this afternoon. From the results of the reports received, there are two sub-districts that were most severely affected by flash floods.

“This is a disaster for us. There are two sub-districts that are mainly affected by floods, namely Garut Kota and Tarogong (Kidul),” Helmi said when confirmed detikJabar, Friday night.



Helmi appealed to residents to remain calm, but vigilant. Garut local government, Helmi said, had mobilized the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) and the Fire Department (Disdamkar) to help evacuate residents from their homes. Residents living near the Cimanuk River are advised to evacuate and evacuate.

“Calm down but be alert. Immediately, I have instructed BPBD to evacuate immediately. Save the community first, then the others will follow,” he said.

There are several areas that were most severely affected by flash floods in Garut Kota District, namely in the Wetan City, Maktal, Kaum Lebak to Ciwalen areas. The water level at several points in the area reaches as high as the chest of an adult.

There are Residents Trapped in Flood

The Head of Wetan City, Galih Mawariz, said that until Saturday (16/7/2022) at around 12:05 WIB, the flood was still inundating the residents’ houses. It is estimated that hundreds of houses were affected.

“The water level has dropped, but not significantly. Now the height is below the navel of an adult’s body. We are currently still in the field and conducting sweeps, it is feared that there are still residents trapped at home,” said Galih to DetikJabar.

In addition to a number of areas in Garut City, the Cimacan area in Tarogong Kidul District is also the worst flood point at this time. The water level there is reportedly up to two meters. The Cimacan area itself is located on the outskirts of the Cimanuk River.

Tarogong Kidul Sector Police Chief Commissioner Alit Kadarusman said there were residents trapped in houses in the Cimacan area. Currently, joint SAR team officers are trying to conduct sweeps and evacuations.

“There are dozens of residents trapped in their homes. Currently, we and the joint SAR team are carrying out evacuation efforts using rubber boats,” said Alit.

The current situation of the water flow in the Cimanuk River itself has increased significantly. If usually the water is only at the bottom of the river, currently the water is observed to be flowing fast and its volume is increasing.

From monitoring detikJabar, Saturday morning at around 00.16 WIB, through CCTV owned by the Garut Regional Government in the Maktal area which leads directly to the Cimanuk River, it is monitored if the water current is quite heavy. The water level is also almost touching the highest end of the retaining wall.

In a different location, the floodgates of the Copong Dam in Banyuresmi District are also reportedly fully opened. The volume of water in the area is also quite heavy and high.
