PHOENIX – The National Weather Service has issued flash flood warnings until 9:45 p.m. Friday, which includes Casas Adobes, Rillito, Cortaro and Oro Valley.
Between 1 and 2 inches of rain have fallen in the area and additional rain is still on the way due to thunderstorm activity this afternoon.
If you are traveling through a flooded area, here are some key recommendations to keep you safe:
- Avoid crossing flooded areas: If you see water on the road, it is best to find an alternative route. Do not attempt to cross if the water level is unknown or if you cannot see the road condition.
- Know the depth of the water: As a general rule, if the water reaches halfway up your vehicle’s wheels, don’t try to cross. Water can hide road damage or wash away your vehicle.
- Keep your speed low: If you decide to continue, reduce your speed to avoid the risk of hydroplaning and minimize the impact of any waves you may generate.
- Maintain a safe distance: Do not get too close to other vehicles, as water can cause vehicles to slide or change direction suddenly.
- Don’t stop the engine: If you find yourself in the middle of a flooded road, keep the engine running and move slowly. Stopping can allow water to enter the engine and cause damage.
- Pay attention to signs and barricades: Respect warning signs and barricades placed for your safety. These are indications that the road is dangerous or closed.
- Follow instructions from authorities: Listen to recommendations and alerts from local authorities about road conditions and possible alternative routes.
- Remember that personal safety should always be the priority. If you have any doubts about the safety of the road, it is best not to take any risks and find an alternative route.
