Flanders received 75 percent more subsidy applications for home batteries in 2022 – IT Pro – News

There is a financial benefit.
In BE, the green power certificates (subsidies) will no longer apply. So where you used to receive money from the government to produce electricity, this is now done via a feed-in contract with your energy supplier for your residual flow.

The price you get for it is low. So if your solar panels produce energy and you do nothing with it, you will earn little or nothing from it.

It comes down to initially focusing on self-consumption. That pays off the most because you limit the amount of energy you have to purchase.

There are two ways to use more yourself: (own energy)
– Switch on your consumers as soon as possible as soon as there is sun (smart appliances such as washing machines, heat pumps for cooling and air conditioning, home automation, etc.)
– Charge residual energy in a battery so that when you come back from work you can still cook, watch TV, do laundry, charge a laptop, play a game… at an advantageous rate of self-consumption.

Your refrigerator will also run on your battery at night. Also good for €100/year of energy that you don’t have to buy.

A quick calculation example:
A battery of 6.5kwh costs about €3600 without installation. 6000 charge cycles = 15 years if you use it daily = €240/year.

For example, if you produce and consume 4800 kWh per year, that has a value of € 2400 / year at € 0.50 kWh. Your battery adds €240/year on top of that, but ensures that you can use a maximum of 6.5kWh of self-consumption every day as soon as the sun has set = €15/day max yield potential.

€15 is a bit much, but suppose you use an average of €4 in battery power every day, then you save €1400 – €240 = €1160 saved per year while you only have costs of €240 per year in depreciation.

This is a fictional and quick example, every household is different. Some people have a swimming pool, others heat with natural gas and others with a heat pump. Working from home also has an impact.

Another advantage is that a home battery gives you energy security and at a fixed rate at the same time. If prices double, you will not feel that way in the total energy costs of your home. It looks like prices won’t get any cheaper but will only get more expensive over the next 10-20 years.

My conclusion: With the new legislation you save a home battery 2 to 4 times the investment cost of such a battery. Although you have to make sure that you use the battery sufficiently and that you do not pay too much for the installation.
