In the week of 22 March, 154,257 corona vaccines will be administered in Flanders. That is slightly more than 20,000 more than the week before. In the week of March 29, that figure would increase further to 191,421 injections. This was announced on Friday at the weekly press conference of the Agency for Care and Health.

The lion’s share of the corona vaccines (86,895 vaccines) will be put in the vaccination centers next week, 37,530 injections are reserved for hospitals, while the collective healthcare institutions can count on 18,630 corona vaccines. In addition, 10,998 vaccines are planned for the assisted living apartments next week and 204 injections will be administered in the residential care centers.
The following week, the pace will be further increased and 191,421 vaccines will be distributed across Flanders. More than three quarters (165,945 vaccines) are put in the vaccination centers. In addition, 13,050 injections are taken in the hospitals, 7,182 in the collective care facilities and 5,244 in the assisted living apartments.
“The vaccination centers will increasingly become the core of the vaccination campaign,” said Flemish Minister of Welfare Wouter Beke (CD&V). Dirk Dewolf, the CEO of the Agency for Care and Health, added that the figures will be systematically pushed up in the coming weeks to a peak of about half a million doses per week in the month of May. This, of course, only on the condition that the producers actually comply with their delivery schedule.
Technical problem with invitation system
Due to a technical problem with the invitation system of the vaccination centers, some 2,700 primary care providers and an unknown number of people over 65 did not receive a timely invitation to their injection, as was also announced at the press conference.
Dewolf thus confirmed stories that an 83-year-old, for example, has already received an injection, while his 95-year-old neighbor has not yet received an invitation in the bus. ‘That scenario is indeed quite possible,’ says Dewolf. It was said to be a technical problem, which made the system think that the invitations were being sent, but that was not the case. “Everything is being done to remedy the problem,” Dewolf stated. The problem should be resolved in the course of next week, according to the CEO.
