With Rossi and Matheus Cunha in the United States, the idea is that Santos will start the Carioca Championship
Goalkeeper Santos signed a three-year contract with Fortaleza on Tuesday (09). However, Flamengo wants to hold on to number 1 at least until the end of January. As Agustín Rossi and Matheus Cunha will continue with the main squad for the pre-season in the United States, Rubro-Negro’s idea is to have the winner of the Libertadores 2022 in the first rounds of the Cariocão.
Santos performed at the Ninho do Urubu Training Center normally at the beginning of the year, last Monday (08). Many fans were taken by surprise, after all, the number 1 had advanced negotiations with Fortaleza since the end of last season. However, after the end of the ‘soap opera’ on Tuesday (09), the idea is that the goalkeeper will continue for a while longer.
SCHEDULE
Flamengo will debut in the Championship From Rio on January 17th, against Audax, with the starting team. After the game in Manaus, the delegation heads to the United States for two friendlies. Later, with an alternative team, Mengão takes on Nova Iguaçu, in Paraíba, and Portuguesa, in Rio Grande do Norte, on 21 and 27/01, respectively. The plan is to have Santos in the goal in these two duels in the Northeast.
On the other hand, this month, Fortaleza will also only play for the state championship. The first three rounds of the Cearense Championship are against Horizonte (20th), Barbalha (28th) and Iguatu (31st). The main tournaments of the semester for Juan Pablo Vojvoda’s team only start in February, such as the Copa do Nordeste and Copa do Brasil. Therefore, the people from the Northeast should not hinder Flamengo’s desire and have Santos for another 21 days.

Through negotiations with Fortaleza, Flamengo will receive up to 1.4 million dollars (around R$7 million) if the goals set out in the contract are achieved. To convince Santos to leave Rubro-Negro, the team from Ceará offered a long contract (three years) and salaries close to current salaries at Mais Querido. The goalkeeper arrives at Vojvoda’s team to replace Fernando Miguel, who signed with Ceará.
