Flamengo’s Home Game Victory and Average Attendance: A 2023 Analysis

The season isn’t over yet, but the Flamengo said goodbye to his fans in his last home game with the 2-1 victory over Cuiabá on Sunday. In a year in which they ended up frustrating the Red and Blacks without winning any of the seven titles they played for, off the field the club even surpassed the magical year of 2019 and had its best average attendance in the last 10 years (the ge started controlling the public in 2013).

On average, the Flamengo took 53,983 paying fans to 37 games in charge of the field (see table below). Most of the matches were at Maracanã, but the team also played some at Mané Garrincha, in Brasília, and at Kleber Andrade, in Cariacica (ES). In 2019, the average was 52,537 paying in 36 matches.

*Obs: In 2020 and 2021, most games were played behind closed doors due to the Covid-19 pandemic, which is why these matches were not counted.

The performance of Flamengo as home team in 2023 it was 72% (won 80 of the 111 points played). In the Brazilian Championship, the success was lower: 61.4% (he scored 35 of the 57 points he played). The campaign is Rubro-Negro’s worst at home in Série A since 2015, when they scored 27 points and finished in 12th place. The best was in 2019, an edition in which he scored 53 points.

Despite the support of the fans, the poor performance at home was one of the reasons for the lack of titles in 2023. As home team at Maracanã, the Flamengo lost the Recopa Sudamericana to Independiente del Valle on penalties; was defeated by São Paulo in the final of the Copa do Brasil and lost precious points in the Brasileirão, such as draws with relegated América-MG and Cruzeiro, who are still fighting to escape the Z-4; and the reserves of São Paulo and Internacional.
