47 years ago, Flamengo instituted payment for broadcasting rights in Brazil. At the end of the 70s, TV Educativa went to the stadiums, recorded the games and broadcast them to the TV stations that sold the matches. Noticing the drop in attendance at the stadiums, Flamengo was the club that demanded payment for TV rights. And it was in a Fla-Flu on November 15, 1977 that it all began.
“Flamengo is not against televising games, on the contrary, they think it’s important. But they want to win too.” said Márcio Braga, then president of the club.

The decision angered Globo’s top management, but from then on the clubs began to receive the rights to broadcast their games. And since then the difference in what Flamengo receives from other clubs has always been very evident.
However, in mid-2020, Landim, current president of Flamengo, managed to approve the so-called “Manager Law” where clubs have the right to sell their games as host to as many broadcasters as they want. What seemed at first to be an even greater source of income for the clubs, ended up being one of the biggest mistakes that Flamengo management made in relation to TV broadcasting rights.
With the contract approved this Monday (8) by the Deliberative Council, Flamengo not only lost much of its advantage over the other clubs, but together with Grêmio, had its contract renewed for much less than it earned until 2024.
Under the contract that ends at the end of this year, Globo transferred to Flamengo, in 2023, 275 million reais and to Palmeiras 163 million. Under the new contract that will be valid from 2025 and will run until 2029, Flamengo will earn 198 million reais against 191 million reais for Palmeiras.
To give a better example, if in 2025 Flamengo and Palmeiras finish in the same places as in 2023 in the Brazilian Championship, Palmeiras would ultimately receive 238.8 million reais, while Flamengo would receive 238.6 million.
In other words, for the first time in history, Flamengo would be overtaken by a club in the distribution of television rights.

Corinthians expects to close with Globo by next Monday and the talk there is about signing the best contract in Corinthians history. To do this, Corinthians demands to win the same as Flamengo. If they succeed, Corinthians will close the financial distance to Fla.
In the table below, you can clearly see how Flamengo’s difference with the other clubs was reduced through this new contract.

Landim showed strength and managed to overcome the opposition who were extremely unhappy with the format of the new contract, but he will have to manage through marketing to sell his broadcasting rights abroad in order to at least recover what was lost in the new contract and try to increase again the difference for the opponents.
If he fails, Landim will go down in history as the president who handed over the financial advantage that Flamengo had since 1977 over its direct opponents in TV rights.
