Flamengo draws with LDU and advances to the Libertadores round of 16

With one player less since the 14th minute of the first half after the expulsion of Willian Arão, Flamengo again committed serious defensive failures, played badly, was close to suffering the first defeat in the Libertadores, but pulled out a tie with the LDU by 2 to 2 this Wednesday. Flamengo secured a place in the knockout stage because it reached 11 points in Group G and can no longer be reached by LDU, third place and which is eliminated. Before that, Flamengo turns its attention to the final of the Campeonato Carioca. On Saturday, at 9:05 pm, he faces Fluminense in the second game of the decision to define the state champion. In the first leg, 1 to 1. Whoever wins, therefore, will have the cup.

Rogério Ceni surprised the squad by choosing the scheme with three defenders and preserving important players, such as Filipe Luís, Diego, Arrascaeta and Bruno Henrique, for the final of the Carioca Championship. Gustavo Henrique, Bruno Viana and Léo Pereira formed the defensive trio and Willian Arão returned to the midfield.

The midfielder, in fact, played an important role in the result of the game. In his 300th game with the red-black shirt, Arão had an unhappy night and was sent off in the 14th minute of the first half. In a split with Amarilla, he raised his foot too far, hit the opponent in the face in the face and received a direct red card.

With one less, Flamengo’s life naturally became more difficult. However, the numerical inferiority was compensated by the talent of its main players. Pedro teamed up with Gabriel and, in a move of technique, strength, insistence and race, managed to open the scoring in the 31st minute. After crossing from the right to the area, the striker fought with the defender twice in the body, dominated with much category and kicked pressed under the goalkeeper. The ball crossed the line and slipped in.

If the attack continues to work and has been the strong point of the red-black team for several years, the defense remains the Achilles’ heel. This was reinforced with the goal scored by Guerra. The defender went up alone in the middle of the area after a cross from the right and headed in Gabriel Batista’s left corner to tie the match on 34 minutes.

Ceni put Ramon and Bruno Henrique in place of Léo Pereira and Gabriel and Flamengo came back better from the break, more balanced and adjusted on the pitch. However, when it seemed that it was close to getting back ahead of the scoreboard, the team from Rio took the turn of the LDU, again after being played from the top.

Muñoz crossed from the right into the box, Amarilla straightened with his chest to Johjan Julio, who dribbled Bruno Viana easily and hit hard on top. Beautiful goal by the Ecuadorians that showed the fragility of the Flemish defense in aerial plays. It was the 13th goal suffered by Ceni’s team this season.

Flamengo suffered a lot from the top, but they also know how to use that move to their advantage. It was in this way that Ceni’s men avoided the setback at home, which would be the first in Libertadores. At the end of the match, the team from Rio de Janeiro put pressure, even if without organization, and managed to draw with Gustavo Henrique. After a free kick by Arrascaeta, the defender went higher than the rival defense and headed the ball, Gabbarini did not hold, and the ball went into the corner on 42 minutes. Salvador goal that put Flamengo in the knockout stage of the continental competition.
