MIAMI, Nov. 14, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — You had to be there and see it to believe it was true. Last Monday night, the Plaza de España in Seville became the largest and most important flamenco tablao in the world, and to those who may think it’s an exaggeration, it wasn’t there. Flamenco is Universal has without a doubt been an iconic event within the Santalucía Universal Music Week. More than 130 artists have met and merged in performances that will be part of an audiovisual work that will serve to teach flamenco art to the world. That type of show about which, as was commented among the audience at the end of the show, they will proudly say “I was there.”
The night was opened by the voice of Rosario, daughter of the unmistakable Lola Flores, remembering all the classics of this art declared Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. Next, Jesús López, Chairman and CEO of Universal Latin America and the Iberian Peninsula, was in charge of opening the night with a speech that aroused applause from the public on several occasions. He highlighted that Spanish music dialogues along the same lines as Anglo-Saxon music and that if flamenco is universal it is not something to make a mark for, but because it is a national pride. And from there, art made its way for almost two hours beginning with the voice of Doña Carmen Linares, 2023 Latin GRAMMY Honor, singing for Granaínas.
All the flamenco families were sitting in the front row: Camarón’s sons and widow, Paco de Lucía’s daughters and his widow, La Farruca surrounded by her children, the Morente… All of them attended with admiration the tributes to their sagas, brought to the stage by Tomatito, la Macanita, Niño Josele, Rancapino Chico, Pedro El Granaíno or Marina Heredia, among others. Vicente Soto with his daughter Lela took Jerez on stage for the first time that night, Dorantes caressed the piano so that Alba Molina paid tribute to her parents, Lole and Manuel, and the Morentes (Estrella and Kiki), supported by their usual team, gave a heartfelt look at Enrique, whose voice was heard in his immortal Omega. At the halfway point of the Gala, Sara Baras appeared with her tribute to Carmen Amaya, which left the audience stupefied after the singing and playing that characterized the first part of the show. He was followed by Israel Fernández and Diego del Morao, who paid honors to the Niña de los Peines
The entire show, with transitions made by the renowned artist Javier de la Rosa and music composed for the occasion by Paco Soto, was and continues to be masterful. The Huelva fandango was represented by three leading women: Argentina, Sandra Carrasco and the young promise Ángeles Toledano, and to finish that block what better way than to call Tomatito back to the stage to play José Mercé, with the presence of the dancer Manuela Carrasco, nicknamed “the Goddess”. And, finally, the reunion with Jerez through bulería, and no one better than Diego Carrasco, El Zambo, María Terremoto and Fernando Soto, among many others, to do it.
The emotional moment that gave way to the tablao that was set up by Farruco and his people was the delivery to the entire Camarón family, presided over by his widow, La Chispa, of a guitar by artisan luthier Manuel Rodríguez, a reference in a saga that He has been making these instruments by hand for three generations.
At the close of this press release the big final party began. The president of the Junta de la Andalucía, Juanma Moreno, the mayor of Seville, José Luis Sanz, Sebastián Yatra, Juanes, Anitta, David Bisbal, Manuel Carrasco, Danna Paola, Lola Índigo, Pablo López, Vanesa Martín, Pastora Soler, the Morancos, Nati Abascal. Morat, Antonio Carmona, Boris Izaguirre and a long list of figures from music, acting, journalism and culture, enjoyed an after show in which it was clear that Seville, in addition to being a color, has a special sound: that of flamenco as a flag.
