Flag football, a variant of American football without physical contact, has been generating enthusiasm in Stinatz for years. The sports field is always well attended during Stinatz Ozelots home games. The Ocelots are also attracting attention from a sporting perspective and are in the semi-finals of the second division.

Since 2019, there has been a flag football team in Stinatz, the Ocelots, which is enjoying constant influx. “The squad is getting bigger and more balanced. You notice that within the team. We are growing together more and more, took a big step forward last season and have developed a lot again this year,” said player Jan Zsifkovits.

Home advantage exploited
Ten games from the second Austrian league were played on matchday on Sunday. The Ocelots were able to take advantage of their home advantage and qualify for the semi-finals. “When family and friends come to watch, that of course provides additional motivation. “So I think it’s great that we were able to play this round at home,” said Peter Vrbek.

“It’s not that often in flag football that you can play in front of your home crowd because the so-called game days take place in Innsbruck, Wiener Neustadt, Graz or Vienna. That’s why home game days like this are of course something special for us,” says Jan Zsifkovits.
Flag Football will become an Olympic Games
Since this season, the Ocelots have had to share the playing field in Stinatz with the football club again. But that doesn’t lead to problems: “We have over 130 members. We have 44 active players. We all stick together, whether it’s with the sports club or with the youth. If there is something, we all tackle it together,” said Ocelots chairwoman Rebecca Oswald
Flag football is the non-contact form of football. The game is played 5 against 5. A move is ended when a defender pulls out one of the two flags on the waistband of the attacker.

Flag football could be Olympic at the 2028 Olympics. Austria would then have a chance of winning a medal, as the national team was already world champion in 2012. “The North American football league NFL, together with the American organizing committee, is trying everything to get the sport into the program for the 2028 games in Los Angeles. “The decision will now be made in November as to whether this will happen or not,” said Philipp Pölzl, who was a player when the Austrians won the World Cup in 2012.
