Flag Football: German men’s team plays for eleventh place

The selection of the American Football Association of Germany (AFVD) will now face Japan.

The German men have suffered another defeat at the Flag Football World Cup. The selection of the American Football Association of Germany (AFVD) lost 20:43 to Israel in the placement games in Lahti, Finland, and will play against Japan for eleventh place on Friday (10:30 a.m.).

The team had previously lost to Italy 26:48 in the round of 16 on Wednesday evening after a weak second half. In the subsequent placement games for positions 9 to 16, Germany had first celebrated a 45:39 victory against the Czech Republic, but now had to admit defeat to Israel.

Meanwhile, the German women won their first placement game 26:20 against Brazil, having also lost to Italy in the round of 16 (16:19). On Friday, Germany will play France (8:00 a.m.).

Flag football, which will be an Olympic sport for the first time in Los Angeles in 2028, is different from the classic version, particularly in terms of toughness. It is played between the two end zones on a 50 by 25 yard field. The teams consist of five players who wear two bands (flags) on a waist belt. If one is torn off, this counts as a tackle.
