Tragedy Strikes: Five-Year-Old Venezuelan Migrant Dies from Sepsis in Chicago Migrant Center
In a heartbreaking turn of events, a five-year-old Venezuelan migrant boy named Jean Carlos Martinez has lost his life due to sepsis. The young boy contracted multiple infections while residing in a dirty migrant center in Chicago, which also left several others sick. The City of Chicago released a statement revealing that Martinez was plagued with various illnesses, including COVID-19 and Group A Strep, which ultimately proved fatal.
Martinez’s devastating demise occurred on December 17th, after shelter staff attempted to perform chest compressions on the little boy and rushed him to the hospital. Shockingly, this tragedy unfolded despite the city’s previous claims that there was no outbreak at the Pilsen center. However, four other children had also been hospitalized around the same time, raising concerns about the safety and well-being of the migrants residing in the facility.
According to Martinez’s autopsy report, he not only had COVID-19 but also adenovirus, rhinovirus, and Group A Strep. These multiple infections undoubtedly contributed to his rapid deterioration and untimely death. The autopsy findings were confirmed by Spectrum News and FOX 32.
City officials continue to assert that all shelter residents receive regular medical screenings. They claim that weekly on-site provider support and on-site vaccination events for COVID-19, varicella, and the flu are provided. Furthermore, they assure that migrants have access to health centers for all their healthcare needs. Despite these assurances, the Pilsen center has faced mounting criticism due to the increasing number of medical emergencies occurring within its walls.
A volunteer who worked at the center revealed in December that residents often approached them for basic necessities such as blankets and clothing. This highlights the challenging conditions faced by migrants seeking refuge in Chicago. In response to the crisis, Governor JB Pritzker pledged $182 million, and Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle contributed an additional $70 million to support migrants in the city. These funds supplement the $160 million provided by the state in November to welcome migrants into the sanctuary city.
The influx of migrants into major liberal cities like Chicago and New York has led to a significant financial burden. Over the past 18 months, Illinois alone has spent more than $250 million in taxpayer money to address the migrant crisis.
