A beach located in southern Florida was the scene of a tragedy that cost the life of a five-year-old girl, who suffocated after a large amount of sand ended up falling on her this Tuesday, February 20.
According to local media, the minor was digging a large hole with a child, but he collapsed and ended up burying them both. The little boy, aged seven, managed to be rescued alive, but remains admitted to a hospital in critical condition.
The incident occurred at a store in Lauderdale-by-the-sea, in Broward County. Some witnesses indicated that both children were playing and began to dig a hole in the sand, but in the middle of this, the ground gave way without warning and the minors ended up crushed.
These people indicated that the youngest girl ended up completely buried by sand, while the boy was lucky enough to end up covered up to his chest, which saved his life.
The hole the minors dug was around five or six feet deep (1.8 meters) when it collapsed.
A video circulating on social networks shows how several bathers joined together to dig in the sand while trying to remove the buried minors.
Paramedic deputies from the Broward Sheriff’s Office arrived at the scene after receiving an emergency call around 3:16 pm reporting what had happened near the 4400 block of El Mar Drive.
CBS Miami shared images of the hole after the minors were taken out. It was cordoned off by the authorities, but that did not stop several passers-by from surrounding it to see it.
According to the aforementioned media, the rescuers used some boards as support to prevent more sand from falling into the hole while they rescued the child. Until now, it is unknown how long the minor remained buried.
The two minors were rushed to Broward Health Medical Center, located in Fort Lauderdale, but authorities later reported that the girl had not survived.
The identity of the little girl was not shared by the authorities, but it is known that the minor is evolving favorably. Until now, it is unknown whether the minors were visitors or resided in Florida. Nor is the identity of the adults who accompanied them at the time they began excavating known.
