“This gas pipeline poses a direct threat to the security of gas supplies to Ukraine. Each launch of the Gazprom gas pipeline bypassing Ukraine reduced the use of the Ukrainian GTS for transit. There is a significant risk that the launch of Nord Stream 2 will lead to similar consequences. As a result, five cities on Ukrainian-Russian border will immediately lose gas supply, “- said in a statement.
The press service of the Ukrainian GTS Operator does not specify which cities are in question.
The authorities of Ukraine, Poland, Hungary, Moldova, Romania, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia consider the pipeline a threat to energy security Europe.
Joe Biden’s administration spoke against the construction of a gas pipeline, however, at the end of May 2021, the head of the White House called it “counterproductive” from the point of view of relations with Europe, the introduction of new sanctions against Nord Stream 2, since the gas pipeline is “practically finished.”
Germany and the United States announced on July 21, 2021 that they have concluded agreement on the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, which should connect Germany and the Russian Federation along the bottom of the Baltic Sea, bypassing Ukraine. Germany promised to apply national sanctions against Russia and call for effective EU measures if Russia continues to use gas as a an instrument of pressure on other countries or “will commit further aggressive actions against Ukraine.”
The Ukrainian authorities believe that the Russian Federation has already begun use Nord Stream 2 as a weapon – Russia restricts gas exports to Europe in order to raise prices, create an energy crisis and justify the launch of the gas pipeline, which is undergoing certification.
November 13, 2021 Gazprom refused to book for December additional transit of gas through Ukraine.
November 16 German Federal Network Agency temporarily stopped the certification process Nord Stream 2AG as the operator of the Russian Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.
