Although IFAB has taken such a decision for five shifts, it is the responsibility of each federation or organization under whose auspices the competition is to implement and maintain them in each individual competition.
With the introduction of five-player substitutions, IFAB will allow teams to include 15 substitutes in the game application, instead of the 12 as before.
Infantino also revealed that after the IFAB’s annual meeting, experts will decide whether the semi-automatic rearward detection system will be used in this year’s World Cup. The system has already been tested in other high-end tournaments, including the FIFA Club World Cup in February.
Officially, this system is called semi-automatic, because the final decision is still made by the judge.
“We are currently happy with the system, and experts will review it before launching the World Cup,” Infantino told a news conference.
IFAB also decided that the referees could soon have body chambers during the game to protect the referees themselves and reduce attacks and disrespect for them.
