Five shark bites in two weeks, the fault of clumsy young specimens?

Have New York State Sharks Gone Crazy? In Long Island (United States), five people were injured in the wrists, ankles or shins after being bitten by sharks, reports the NPR relayed by Slate.

In one month, since June 30, six victims have even been identified in the sector. The bites are not serious but their frequency has chilled swimmers and other water sports enthusiasts. As always in such a situation, scientists point out that man-eating sharks do not exist.

Young immature sharks involved?

These “attacks” would only be the result of confusion by sharks between the feet of humans and fish. The animals in question are probably bull sharks, present in large numbers in this area of the North Atlantic. In 2020, the species was classified as protected by the State of New York, which allowed them to proliferate.

In 2016, scientists identified that these sharks had a breeding ground near South Bay, south of Long Island. Attacks on humans could potentially come from immature young bull sharks, which accidentally bite swimmers while trying to catch fish.
