About 100,000 people with an increased risk of a serious course of COVID-19 will receive an invitation to come and get an injection for the disease in the coming days, RIVM said on Wednesday. It concerns five risk groups, divided into four different patient groups with immune system problems and a group of people with a neurological disorder.
These patient groups are given priority in the vaccination process on the advice of the Health Council, because the risk of becoming seriously ill or dying from the consequences of the corona virus is extra great for them.
Patients with a certain type of blood cancer, severe kidney failure or a congenital immune disorder and patients who have undergone an organ, stem cell or bone marrow transplant can expect an invitation through their hospital. People with a neurological abnormality that affects their breathing will also receive a call from the hospital where they are being treated this week or next.
People who are not mobile enough to go to the hospital themselves due to their neurological disorder are included in the group of non-mobile elderly living at home. These people will be injected at home from the end of March.
Groups receive vaccination from Moderna
The five risk groups are vaccinated with the vaccine from the pharmaceutical company Moderna. It was the second vaccine approved for use in the European Union.
The vaccine has a 94 percent effectiveness and can well protect the elderly and those at increased risk of severe COVID-19. Like the Pfizer vaccine, Moderna’s vaccine comes in two doses. The second shot is administered 28 days after the first dose.
