Five people have been stuck in a cave system in Slovenia about 50 kilometers south of the capital Ljubljana since yesterday. They were surprised by heavy rain and have to wait until the water in the cave recedes.
It concerns a father, mother and their adult child, a guide and a guide in training. The water in the cave rose rapidly in two places, making returning to the entrance impossible. As per protocol, a third guide came to check on the situation when the group had not returned by 3 p.m. and alerted the emergency services.
Plateau
The group was reached by a diving team approximately 2000 meters from the entrance to the cave. They have received food and extra clothing to keep them warm. They are sitting on a kind of plateau about 10 meters above the water surface and are doing well, the rescue team reports. The rescue team expects the water to recede tonight. Only then is an attempt made to free the five.
The Krizna Jama cave system is a popular attraction in Slovenia and is over 8,000 meters long. In the cave you travel partly on foot and partly in a rubber boat in the lakes in the cave. The cave may only be entered with a guide. The Slovenian news source 24ur.com reports that the waiting time to visit the cave can be up to a year.
