The events took place in Yonkers, a suburb of New York. The man ignored a red light and quickly collided with another vehicle.
The four occupants of this vehicle, all 18 years old, were thrown from the car and died instantly. The 36-year-old driver involved in the crash died shortly after in hospital.
According to the police, the individual had already violated the highway code several times.
“Four young people lost their lives prematurely due to one person’s irresponsibility. Let this be a lesson for all those who are crazy about the wheel, ”responded Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano.
