Five new cases of West Nile virus detected in Var, several people hospitalized

Five new people have been infected with the West Nile virus, ARS Paca announced this Thursday.

In total, this brings to ten the number of cases recorded in the Varparticularly in the municipalities of Ollioules, La Seyne-sur-Mer, Six-Fours-les-Plages and Sanary-sur-Mer.

Although infected people are usually asymptomatic, a flu-like syndrome may occur, with fever, headaches or muscle pain.

The ARS specifies that “Among these ten cases, four presented neuroinvasive forms requiring hospitalization.

No human-to-human transmission

It is therefore advisable to remain vigilant and to protect against mosquito bitesespecially in the evening when they are most present.

West Nile virus infection is a viral disease, transmitted by mosquitoes (mainly of the genus Culex) which become infected exclusively through contact with infected birds.explains ARS Paca.

“Man and horse are ‘accidental hosts‘ of the virus. There is no transmission of the virus from human to human (or from horse to human) via the mosquito.”

“No Culex mosquito is the common mosquito in metropolitan France. It bites mainly in the evening and at night, unlike the tiger mosquito which bites mainly during the day.
