Munich – Even before his teammates entered the training ground on Säbener Strasse on Thursday morning, Robert Lewandowski (32) had finished work.
Lewandowski is training again – without the ball
The world footballer packed things up with fitness coach Simon Martinello and marched towards the cabin. Lewandowski had previously completed a crisp rehab program, sprints and coordination exercises were already possible for him after his ligament stretching in his right knee. But the most important thing was still missing: the ball.
It is therefore extremely unlikely that Lewandowski will be part of the Bayern squad again on Saturday (3.30 p.m. / Sky and in the AZ live ticker) in the difficult top game at VfL Wolfsburg. The Pole should make his comeback next week – either against Bayer Leverkusen on Tuesday evening or then on April 24 at FSV Mainz 05.
Five more goals to the Müller record
The big question is: Will Lewandowski still break Gerd Müller’s “eternal” record? The Bayern legend had a whopping 40 goals in the 1971/72 season, Lewandowski is currently 35 goals. He has four or, at best, five games left for five or, at best, six goals. Is the record plan working?
“It is important, especially with a player of his caliber, not to do anything too early,” said coach Hansi Flick about Lewandowski: “We will use him when everyone gives the green light. Not before because the risk is simply too great. ” The 32-year-old, who sustained a knee injury in his Poland’s World Cup qualifier against Andorra (3-0), wants to play the European Championship in the summer. A worse injury would complicate this endeavor.
FC Bayern needs a goalscorer
On the other hand, the Munich team urgently need their striker to secure at least the ninth championship in a row. The lead over pursuers RB Leipzig is currently five points. And Bavaria has not yet won the game in Wolfsburg.
How much Lewandowski is missing was shown by the Champions League games against Paris Saint-Germain: Representative Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting (32) did a good job and scored two goals, but in the combination game the attacker could not beat Bayern Support form, as Lewandowski usually does. “Especially in the most important phase of the season, namely April and May, we don’t have Lewandowski, Gnabry, Goretzka, Süle available,” complained Flick, “players who would have helped us.”
