1. Five major airlines will share new long-haul flights to Reagan National Airport near Washington
The Transportation Department has tentatively awarded slots on five new long-haul flights per day at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport to five of the largest U.S. airlines, while rejecting offers from some low-fare carriers. The routes announced Wednesday will provide more options for travelers traveling between Washington and major Western cities such as San Francisco and Seattle. The Department of Transportation said it would hear comments on its decision by October 30 and then respond to comments by November 8.
Many travelers prefer the convenience of Reagan National Airport, a subway ride from downtown Washington, to Dulles International Airport, which is more than 20 miles (32 kilometers) west of the nation’s capital.
Federal law strictly limits flights to Reagan National Airport to more than 1,250 miles (2,000 kilometers), and Congress this year approved enough new rights to support five additional round-trip flights per day.
The Transportation Department has denied JetBlue Airways’ request to add an additional flight from San Juan, Puerto Rico. The Transportation Department ruled that Frontier Airlines and Spirit Airlines were ineligible because Congress stipulated that only airlines already operating flights from Reagan National Airport were eligible to compete.
Currently, there are a limited number of long-haul flights to Reagan National from cities such as Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle and Denver, and the new flights will increase the number of those flights.
