Israeli airstrikes at Damascus airport killed five soldiers, according to the Syrian regime. There is also material damage. It is not yet clear what the consequences will be for air traffic to and from the Syrian capital.
Israel has not yet responded. The country has stepped up airstrikes at Syrian airports in recent weeks. Damascus airport was closed for two weeks in June after an air raid. Aleppo airport was twice the target of Israeli bombings last month.
According to insiders, Israel wants to use the attacks to eliminate military support supply routes from Iran. Tehran mainly uses cargo planes to supply arms to Iranian-affiliated groups in Syria and Lebanon.
Israel has carried out hundreds of air strikes over the years against the positions of the Syrian military and Iranian-backed groups such as the Lebanese Hezbollah.
The Israeli government says it wants to prevent archenemy Iran from gaining a foothold in neighboring Syria and Lebanon.
