Missiles fired at targets around Damascus – Targeted against militias loyal to Iran.
Israel has reportedly fired rockets at targets around the capital Damascus. Five militants loyal to Iran were killed, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported on Saturday. Several fighters were also injured, some seriously. The Israeli army refused to comment on the reports when asked.
The Syrian state agency SANA initially reported two injuries, citing military sources. Accordingly, property damage also occurred. The air defense intercepted most of the surface-to-surface missiles fired from northern Israel.
According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the attacks were directed against arsenals and other targets of militias loyal to Iran. Residents of the affected areas heard explosions, as they reported to the German press agency.
Israel’s military has repeatedly attacked targets in the neighboring civil war country. Israel wants to prevent militias supported by Iran from expanding their influence – especially near its northern border. Iran is closely allied with the Syrian Prime Minister Bashar al-Assad. Pro-Iranian militias are fighting alongside government forces in Syria. Israel has been Iran’s number one archenemy since the Islamic revolution 42 years ago.
