Five Days in September: Retrospective of Laima Žurgina’s Documentary Films

Very soon, on September 24, we will celebrate the anniversary of film director Laima Žurginas. Having started her path in cinema, becoming a co-director with Uldis Braun during the filming of the film “235 000 000”, one of the highest peaks of the poetic school of Riga’s documentary cinema, she has continued to be active in documentary cinema, creating both films and film magazines, concise recordings of the era and personalities.

In order to give the director’s anniversary a cinematic dimension, producer Uldis Cekulis together with film director Kristini Briedi and film scholar Zani Balčus have created a retrospective of the works of the prominent documentarian “Five Days in September”. As part of it, from September 20 to 24, a wide selection of her films will be shown in the Living Room of the art center “Zuzeum” in five thematic sections: “My Second University”, “Familiar Faces”, “Political Sidestep”, “Time Caught Behind the Tail” and “Generations portrait”. In the introduction to the screenings, the director herself will indulge in reminiscences, in which the comic alternates with the behind-the-scenes of making movies. On the other hand, for those who will not be able to attend the “Zuzeum” screenings, from September 24, there will be an opportunity to get to know Laima Žurgin’s selection of films on the portal films.lv.

In the program “Piejuras klimats” together with the jubilee himself Laima Jurgins and film scientists, curators of the “Five days in September” program Zani Balchus let’s take a look at the films included in this selection: portrait films “The Fourth Dimension”, “Imants Ziedonis. Portrait in Folds” and “The Ugly Duckling – Human Child” from the show “Familiar Faces”, as well as the shocking 1990 film “They are also my sons” from the show “Political Sidestep”.
