Five days after his dismissal, Sam Altman returns as CEO of OpenAI

“We have an agreement in principle that Sam will return to OpenAI as CEO under a new board,” the company said on X (formerly Twitter).

Altman says he is happy to be returning to OpenAI and would like to strengthen the relationship with Microsoft. That company is the largest shareholder in OpenAI and, thanks to billions in investments, it owns almost half of the company.

Band met Microsoft

On Sunday evening he decided to join that company and work on a new artificial intelligence project. Nearly all of the company’s 700 employees threatened to follow Altman to Microsoft.

That was enough to win the power struggle within the company. There will also be a new board, including several veterans from the tech world. The board of directors at American companies has a supervisory role, comparable to that of the supervisory board at European companies.

Heavyweights from the tech world

Former Salesforce CEO Bret Taylor will become chairman. He is joined by Larry Summers, Secretary of the Treasury under President Bill Clinton, and Adam D’Angelo, the founder and CEO of knowledge site Quora.

They replace the board members who made the decision to fire Altman on Friday. The reason was given that he did not communicate clearly with the board. They seem to have overplayed their hand. The decision prompted co-founder Greg Brockman to also resign.
