More than 20 suspected cases of infection by the Monkeypox virus – known as monkeypox – were identified in the Lisbon and Tagus Valley region. There are already five cases confirmed by the National Institute of Health Dr Ricardo Jorge.

The cases, mostly young, and all male, are stable, presenting ulcerative lesions.

Among the suspected symptoms are ulcerative lesions, skin rash, palpable lymph nodes, possibly accompanied by fever, chills, headache, muscle pain and tiredness.

“In the face of suspicious symptoms, the individual should refrain from direct physical contact”, warns the Directorate-General for Health.

According to the Directorate-General for Health, the disease is transmissible through contact with animals or close contact with infected people or contaminated materials. According to the DGS, the disease is rare and does not spread easily among humans.

The DGS appealed to health professionals to be alert to any suspected cases of the disease.
