Five cases of botulism caused by a pesto sauce have likely been discovered in humans in France, the French Ministry of Agriculture reports.

The ministry reports that the sauce in question was sold at various market fairs in central France. “Due to the artisanal production conditions, it cannot be guaranteed that the jars were sterilized. Therefore, as a precaution, it was immediately decided to recall all jars,” reports the ministry.

Botulism is a rare disease that can be fatal if not recognized and treated quickly. The people who were infected have been treated, the ministry reports. The pesto is being tested and the results are expected within two days.

The Ministry of Agriculture does not rule out more infections. “Given the incubation period (from a few hours to a few days) and the serious nature of the disease, people who may have consumed these products are urged to be extremely vigilant,” it said.

Botulism is a serious illness caused by the toxins of bacteria. People can get botulism by eating improperly stored, contaminated food. Botulism in humans can also occur through contact with dead fish and dead waterfowl.

The symptoms start with nausea, vomiting, dizziness and abdominal pain. Then there can be difficulty speaking. Sometimes there are problems with breathing and people can die.
