Five cantons reported no new cases of COVID-19 on December 15

The Ministry of Health of Costa Rica reported this afternoon that the 927 new cases of COVID-19 registered in the country are located in 77 of the 82 cantons, those that did not report new cases are: Alvarado, Dota, Río Cuarto, Jiménez and Zarcero.

Of all the cantons with new cases, the ten that accumulate more cases (40.02% of the total of those announced today) are: Alajuela with 57; Saint Joseph with 54; Puntarenas with 42; Goicoechea with 38; Lemon with 33; Saint Charles with 32; Heredia with 31; Golfito with 30; Pococí with 28; and Helpless with 26.

Another 24 cantons report double-digit numbers of new infections: Liberia with 24; Siquirres with 22; Perez Zeledon with 20; Corridors, Nicoya, Part and Vazquez de Coronado with 19; Cartago and Greece with 16; The Union and Sarapiquí with 15; Alajuelita, Esparza, Naranjo and Santa Barbara with 14; Coto Brus, Curridabat and Santo Domingo with 13; Belen, Paradise and Tibás with 11; and Garabito, Saint Paul and Turrialba with 10.

Given D +: Pérez Zeledón, Hojancha, Santa Cruz and Pococí go on orange alert for COVID-19, while the cantons of Mora, Alajuela, Orotina, Palmares, Poás, San Carlos, Flores, Sarapiquí, White hair and Mountains of Gold They will lower their alert status as of tomorrow and will enter the yellow zone.

20 cantons reported between nine and five new infections: in Matina, Orotina and Quepos there were nine, in Parrita there were eight, in Aserrí, Barva, Buenos Aires, Flores, Montes de Oca, Poás and Sarchí there were seven, in Abangares, Guácimo, Montes de Oro, Puriscal and Santa Ana there were six and in Carrillo, Palmares, San Ramón and Talamanca five cases were registered.

18 cantons reported between four and two new cases: in Acosta, El Guarco, Los Chiles, Mora, Nandayure, Oreamuno and San Isidro there were four; in Athens, Escazú, La Cruz, Moravia and Inflammation there were three; Meanwhile in Bagaces, Cañas, Guatuso, León Cortés, San Rafael and Tarrazú they were two.

Finally, in Hojancha, San Mateo, Santa Cruz, Tilarán and Turrubares a new case was reported.

The number of pending cantonal domicile cases now amounts to 627, of which 122 cases are active.

Of the new cases announced today, 703 correspond to cases confirmed by PCR test analyzed in an accredited laboratory and the others 224 correspond to cases confirmed by nexus, that is, people who developed symptoms of COVID-19 and live with people who tested positive in the PCR test for SARS-CoV-2.

Confirmed cases are registered in 82 cantons of the 7 provinces corresponding to 130,298 adults, 11,025 older adults and 12,671 minors.

Of the confirmed cases, 75,208 are women (+456 compared to yesterday) and 78,888 are men (+471). Likewise, 133,189 are Costa Rican (+862 compared to yesterday) and 20,907 are foreigners (+65), a figure that also includes residents.

There are 121,031 people recovered (+2520 more than yesterday) and 1956 deaths (+20), so the number of active cases (currently infected) is 31,109. The number of active cases decreased compared to the previous day (-1613). 78.54% of confirmed cases are recorded as recovered and the fatality rate of the virus in Costa Rica is 1.27%. The time-dependent reproducibility number (R_t) estimated for today is 0.95.

Of the cases recovered, 58,882 are women (+1290) and 62,149 are men (+1230). By age there are 103,448 recovered adults (+2164), 7291 older adults (+190) and 10,195 minors (+166).

There is 610 people hospitalized (+3 compared to yesterday) of which 243 are admitted to Intensive Care Units (+6) with ages from 0 to 92 years old.

The number of hospitalized people reported today is the highest since September 28, when 617 people were admitted to the Hall and ICU. However, the number of people in intensive care is the highest since September 24, when 253 were reported.

The percentage of hospital occupancy for COVID-19 patients today reached 47.23% in moderate beds (current capacity 777 out of a goal of 1005) and 79.67% in intensive care beds (current capacity of 307 out of a goal of 359).

The amount of Cases ruled out because their COVID-19 test came back negative rose to 257,590. In total, the results of 2,028 people analyzed in the last 24 hours were reported, with which the cumulative total of people tested (confirmed + discarded) is 411,686.

The positivity (percentage of people tested who test positive) in the last 24 hours was 34.66%, similar to the one registered the previous day of 35.873%.

The total of accumulated tests done to date (which includes discarded, confirmed, reconfirmations, follow-ups, etc.) is 442,821, therefore 2542 more tests were reported than yesterday.
