Five and a half love stories in a flat: Award-winning film at Tallinn Black Nights festival

Liene Vinovska, the representative of the filmmakers, informed LETA agency that the Lithuanian, Latvian and Irish co-production feature film “Five and a half love stories in a flat” by director Tom Vengra was recognized as the best in the “Rebels With a Cause” program of the Tallinn film festival “Black Nights”.

The jury was led by producer Jim Stark, who produced Jim Jarmusch’s films “Outlaw”, “Night on Earth” and others. He is also one of the producers of Reuben Estlund’s “Triangle of Sadness”, which was recently released in cinemas. Roberts Vinovskis, producer of Studija Lokomotive, received the award from the hands of the chairman of the jury at the closing ceremony of the festival.

The romantic drama “Five and a half love stories in a flat” takes place in an Airbnb rental apartment in Vilnius, where guests from Poland, Hungary, Israel and Ireland arrive. With each new online booking, stories of love, guilt, hope and hate unfold before the viewer’s eyes. When the apartment cleaner arrives to prepare it for the next occupants, only hints, indirect references and abandoned or missing objects testify to the passions that have been going on within the walls of the ancient building.

The main character is played by the Latvian actress Velta Žīgure, who lives in Lithuania, the cinematographer is Jurģis Kmins, the costume designer is Liene Dobrāja, the co-producers are Dominiks Jarmakovičs and Roberts Vinovskis.

The director of the film, Vengris, was born and raised in the USA, in a family of Lithuanian emigrants. Studied at Columbia University, where he received a bachelor’s degree, also graduated from the Lithuanian Academy of Arts, and received a master’s degree in directing from the American Film Institute

The Tallinn film festival “Black Nights” was held for the 27th time this year. In 2014, it was accredited as one of only 15 “A” class film festivals and has grown into one of the largest film industry events in Northern Europe with five competition programs and several satellite festivals. Last year, the Tallinn festival was visited by approximately 80,000 moviegoers and 2,000 accredited guests from 75 countries.
