Fishing Luck: Ukrainian Catches Four Humpback Salmon with ‘Cock Hook’

– I was swallowed by a friend yesterday, almost completely by accident, the 39-year-old tells Dagbladet.

And what a stroke of luck it would be to get a cock’s hook – because it ensured a full payoff on a fishing trip in Burfjord in Kvænangen. Iorga caught four humpback salmon, also called “Russian salmon”, in a short time.

– The irony is that a Ukrainian gets a Russian salmon in a chicken stew, he says, laughing.

One salmon has already been eaten – the other three are in the freezer ready for smoking, he says.

– I also caught a cod and some small pollock, he says about the effectiveness of the “cock trap” as a fishing tool.

Nordlys newspaper mentioned Iorga’s fishing luck first.

Iorga tells Dagbladet that he has lived in Norway for 12 years. He now works as a GP in Kvænangen.

After it became known that Iorga had caught four humpback salmon on the “cook hatch”, it became clear that the friends also had to order the same.

– All my friends ordered the “kuksluken” online. I have also ordered several, he says and chuckles.

Despite the fact that the lure was effective, Iorga believes that most of all it is about being in the right place at the right time when fishing for humpback salmon.

– It has to do with sun, weather and wind, not so much with the gully, he says.

When Dagbladet talks to the Ukrainian in northern Norway late on Wednesday evening, the weather is bad with rain, he says. But soon things turn around in the kingdom of the midnight sun.

– It will be sunny again. Then it’s just a matter of pulling out the “cock” at night, he says and laughs.
