– It’s not every day you get someone like that over ten kilos!, says Østby to Dagbladet.
The fisherman from Eidsvoll has indeed secured the year’s first brook trout of over ten kilos. A size that is held in high esteem by fishermen in Norway’s largest lake.
Østby says that the weight stopped at 1010 grams, just over 10 kilos.
Leader of the Hamar Fishing Association, Eirik Robsahm, has confirmed to Dagbladet that the trout is the year’s biggest so far.
It was The fishing newspaper who mentioned the catch first.
– Catastrophic
Østby says that getting a fish over ten kilos is “a dream”.
– I’ve caught quite a few big fish before too, but I didn’t think I’d tip that limit. There is always hope when you work there hour after hour, he says and adds:
– It’s a good thing I haven’t kept a log of how many hours I’ve spent out there.
Østby was out fishing with his girlfriend on Monday evening when the reel went well. He says that the fish bit hard.
– It was something violent. I thought I had been given a cane. I didn’t realize it was a fish until it went airborne. It was a lot of fun!, he says.
He estimates that he fought the beast for about half an hour before it was up in the boat.
The feedback on the catch has also not been long in coming.
– There are many who are both envious and impressed, he says of the fish, which is the largest of its kind this year.
For the record: The largest trout caught in Mjøsa was caught by Robert Torp in 1981. It weighed a whopping 15.3 kilos!
