After seven days missing on the high seas, still aboard their barge, this Sunday in Pichilemu, the two missing fishermen from the Bío-Bío region were found.
These are Rodrigo Cruz García and Diego Cruz Guzmán, father and son respectively, who were taken after the rescue in good condition to the local hospital in the surfing capital of the world.
The intense search was commanded by the Chilean Navy, with the support of local fishermen, as well as other volunteers and institutions.
Thanks to the joint work between the maritime authority and artisanal fishermen from Santa María Island and other areas of the country, the two crew members of the boat “Alexia Esperanza II” were found alive by fishermen from Pichilemu.
The coastal corvette captain, Osvaldo Cuadra, captain of Puerto de Coronel, announced that at around 05:20 in the morning, three nautical miles from Punta de Lobos, Pichilemu area, the two crew members were found alive . At the scene, first aid was provided by taking them on board to give them water and food. He highlighted the joint work between the maritime authority and the artisanal fishermen that allowed a happy ending to be reached, with a successful rescue, which will allow them to be reunited with their loved ones. “This boat was found adrift, providing first aid, and taking them on board to give them food, water and food. “Both are already on land, in Pichilemu, and were taken to a health center in the same town,” said the captain.
In the voice of those rescued, they announced that one more day of delay in the search, the story would have been different, with a sad ending, however, the efforts made by all the rescue teams allowed them to tell this story with a happy ending, describing the event as a true miracle.
It should be remembered that last Sunday, at around 1:00 p.m., father and son went out to work on their fishing duties, however, a failure in the boat’s engine caused them to be dragged by the sea current more than 400 kilometers from the last point, Santa María Island.
This Sunday would be the last day of the Navy’s official search, which made it more urgent that there could be good news. Rodrigo Cruz García, after being found by the crew of the boat “Soledad”, gives a story that is undoubtedly shocking “The engine didn’t want to run. “I knelt down and asked God to save my son,” he recalled.
