Fisherman’s life draws heavily on Rick: ‘If not for me’

The cutter sails out of Den Oever every Sunday evening and does not return until Friday morning. The skipper, his 18-year-old son and two other crew members welcome Rick and show him the wonderful world of shrimp fishing. Although Rick still has his doubts, because life at sea is hard for him. When he wants to take a ‘blink’ – as the gentlemen call a power nap, he soon finds out that sleeping on a sailing boat is not his thing.

“It’s my first night on a boat that goes in all directions,” he says wide awake. “The sound of – in my opinion – 40 machines… and the sound of a professional snorer: that combination is just not feasible for me yet.”

The next day things don’t get much better for Rick, who has had a bad night. While he is outside in the fresh air filleting a fish for dinner, he is suddenly overcome by a fit of nausea. “I feel him a little”, Rick tries to do it with a smile at first, but a little later he really has to take something to let it down. “Really in one go, it just kicks in,” says Rick. “This is not for me this (…) I really long for the mainland now.”

Five Days Inside can be seen every Wednesday at 8.30 pm on RTL 5 or watch the episode again at Videoland.
