Fisherman dies after rescue operation in Northern Norway: Police launch investigation

On Friday, a fishing boat had problems with its propulsion, and the boat drifted towards shore.

The fisherman, who was alone on board, jumped into the sea before the boat went ashore. Two rescue boats and several other fishing boats were sent to the scene.

The fisherman was taken out of the sea by one of the lifeboats and life-saving first aid was given on the spot. The man was then transported by rescue helicopter to Tromsø.

– The fisherman, a man in his 60s, living in Vågan municipality, unfortunately died in the hospital in Tromsø.

The next of kin have been notified and informed that the police will issue a press release.

The police state that they have opened an investigation case to map out what happened.

– As of now, the police have no suspicion that anything criminal has happened. An investigative case can also reveal conditions from a preventive perspective, the police write in the press release.

The rescue operation was handled by the Northern Rescue Centre.

It was The Lofoten post office who first wrote about the rescue operation outside Stamsund, which was launched shortly before 10 o’clock on Friday.
