The traveling party came from Eastern Europe and only two out of six had visited a registered tourist fishing company, reports NRK.

It is illegal to bring more than 18 kilograms of fish out of Norway. Those who bring fish across the border must also be registered with an approved fishing tourism company.

According to the national broadcaster, the traveling party tried to make two rounds across the border to avoid being caught for fish smuggling. They therefore hid some fish in the forest in Finland before driving back to pick up a trailer with the rest of the fish.

It was on the second drive across the border at Karigasniemi that customs became suspicious and stopped them.

Area manager Tom Olsen at the Customs Agency in Northern Norway tells NRK that it was clear that the traveling party was familiar with the Norwegian regulations. The trip thus became expensive and ended with a fine of NOK 50,000, says the Finnmark police district.
